What is FNAC test?

FNAC test is relatively simple and quick process. A fine needle is inserted into the lesions under examination. The needle used here in FNAC test is finer than the regular blood collection needle. Sample of cells is aspirated with the help of needle and syringe by a well-trained healthcare professional. Collected sample cells are then sent to the main laboratory for confirmation of results.

Key advantages of FNAC test are listed below.

  1. Good patient compliance
  2. No need of hospitalization
  3. Cost-effective
  4. Time saving

FNAC test process:

Based on the nature of nodules and lesions under examination, FNAC test can be performed.

  1. Palpable lesions: The lesions and nodules which are palpable and easily found, FNAC test can be carried out with ease without any special requirement.
  2. Non-palpable lesions: In case of non-palpable lesions and nodules, imaging assistance is required for the insertion of needle at the correct location. For this purpose, image-guiding instruments can be used during FNAC test.

Prerequisites and recovery after FNAC test:

The patients who undergo FNAC test can return to their routine activities in a very short period. Anesthesia is not required usually. Only discomfort experienced in patients is because of injection of needle during collection of blood sample, which is not harmful.

A week prior to FNAC test, it is advised not to consume Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Few hours before the test, food consumption is not allowed. To prevent occurrence of infection, prophylactic antibiotics are given during FNAC test.
