An MRI scan involves the person to be tested being made to sleep inside a tube-like machine for getting scanned. High-definition magnets are fitted inside the machine for scanning. The tube-like machine in fact is a scanner which is connected to a computer. Viewing those images after they are generated through this computer screen is easier. The MRI scanning gets over in 15-90 minutes. The scan time also is dependent on the length of the concerned organ to be scanned. Before the scanning actually starts, a contrast agent is injected into the patient's body through an injection administered in his/her vein. The contrast agent helps your radiologist to have a better view of the internal structure of his/her body that is made by soft tissues, muscular linings, nerves etc. MRI scanning is a non-invasive and least harmful and beneficial radiological test. Since it does not involve exposing patient to X-rays it is safer in comparison to other radiological tests like CT-scan and ultrasound that are prescribed by doctors.
MRI scans are highly beneficial for identifying soft tissue injuries to sensitive areas in bones and joints such as ligaments, tendons, cartilage, muscles etc. Injuries to nerve endings present in spinal cord and brain can be detected through MRI for doctor in making further investigations. Disorders of heart, blood vessels, breasts, bones, joints and nervous system are detectable through an MRI.
