Ultrasound procedure makes use of sound waves to to generate images of internal structures of body. The procedure is also called as diagnostic sonography, ultrasonography and sonogram. Ultrasound procedure is not only performed on pregnant women to check fetus growth and progress but also on individual patients to diagnose wide range of problems such as tumors, blockages etc.
Ultrasound procedure has indispensable place in diagnostic science. The test has been performed since several decades to diagnose various health causes. To perform ultrasound, you may have to change into hospital gown and remove all types of metallic jewelry. You will be asked to lie down on an examination table and keep the part on which ultrasound is to performed open. A special type of gel which allows transmission of sound waves is applied on the open part. Sound waves are produced by a device called as transducer. These sound waves pass into that particular part of the body where special gel is applied and get reflected back when they strike against any obstacle. Images are generated with help of computer. Doctor views these images to diagnose several internal body injuries or disorders. The procedure remains similar when ultrasound is to performed on pregnant women. The only things is that the pregnant women has to drink lot of water (1 liter of water is recommended by doctor) prior to the test so the images of uterus are appear clear on monitor screen.
Ultrasound procedure does not involve any sort of radiation. It is considered to be a very safe and painless procedure. It is an outpatient procedure wherein patient can resume his routine activities immediately after the test.
