Hemoglobin is a type of protein that is found in red blood cells (RBC's). It is responsible for transporting oxygen to each and every cell present in the body and it is because of hemoglobin that blood gets its distinctive red color. RBC 's are the only cells which do not possess nucleus and are produced in bone marrow. The cells live on an average for three months and hence, HbA1c test has to be repeated after every three months to get new blood sugar count.
Glucose molecules get attached to hemoglobin to form 'glycosylated haemoglobin' molecule which in combination is called as Hemoglobin A1C or HbA1C. Higher the level of glucose present in the blood, more will be the count of HbA1C molecules. The test is one of the most reliable options available today for diagnosing diabetes.
HbA1C test procedure
HbA1C test is a simple blood test wherein blood sample is drawn from vein present in arm. Before inserting needle into the vein, antiseptic is applied to that part. The needle is kept inserted until required amount of blood is drawn. Once, it is collected, needle is removed and the blood sample collected is sent to laboratory for further analysis.
No fasting is required for this test. However, it is better to avoid heavy meals just before the test. You can immediately resume your routine activities after the test, including driving. The test lasts only for few minutes and is relatively painless. It might cause a little bit of discomfort for some people; especially when needle is being inserted into the vein.
Interpreting HbA1C test results
Hemoglobin A1c level is between 4% and 5.6% for people who are not suffering from diabetes. A1c level between 5.7% and 6.4% indicates that you are likely to suffer from diabetes if you don't put any restrictions on sugar intake. Levels higher than 6.5% is a sure indication of diabetes. Note that every laboratory has different range for measuring the level of glucose. Hence, it is suggested that one gets the test report analyzed by an expert who is able to give you precise idea and guide you accordingly.
It is important that patient takes medication recommended by doctor regularly and on time to get enhanced outcome and decrease blood sugar level. If these medications are not taken on time, ongoing treatment won't be much effective and will yield poor results.
