A nuchal scan helps in detecting cardiovascular abnormalities in a fetus. The chromosomal abnormalities may result in impaired cardiovascular development. The translucent space in the tissue at the back of your baby's neck is determined by NT scan. In case of babies with abnormalities, more accumulation of fluid at the back of their neck during the first trimester is observed; thus making this clear or translucent space larger than average.
The NT scan is non-invasive in nature. It needs to be done when you're between 11 and 14 weeks pregnant, since during this time, your baby's neck base is still transparent in nature. Procedure of NT scan:
During Nuchal translucency scan, a well-trained and experienced sonographer confirms gestational age of your baby. A sensor called transducer is positioned on the abdomen of the mother so as to observe nuchal translucency of the baby on the screen and to carry out its on screen thickness measurement with the help of calipers.
Nuchal scan is carried out with a transabdominal ultrasound. The process of transabdominal ultrasound involves scanning through your lower abdomen. On the skin of the lower abdomen, a small amount of ultrasound gel is applied. This gel helps in improving contact between the skin and ultrasound probe. In some cases, a transvaginal ultrasound is also required. A close look at the baby, ovaries or cervix may required. On the contrary, when the baby is fine, positive results showing presence of Down syndrome can happen. Such results are known as false-positive results. This may confuse the patients and lead to unnecessary further testing for confirmation of abnormalities. The reliability of a test can be decided based on its detection rate. The advantage of nuchal scanning over the initial biochemical blood profile testing methods is reduction in the rates of false-positive results.
NT scan results
With each day of gestation, baby's nuchal translucency becomes thicker. Based on this, medical researchers have established the length of translucent area during the three weeks of screening. They have also determined the statistical relationship between this measurement, the baby's age, the mother's age, and the possibility of a baby with certain abnormalities. Results can be obtained very soon or it may take up to 10 days based on the data processing conditions.
Nuchal fold thickness
The nuchal translucency is no longer visible at the end of the second trimester of pregnancy. The nuchal fold thickness is measured instead of nuchal translucency between 16 and 24 weeks gestation. The thickness of nuchal fold is considered normal if under 5mm between 16 and 18 weeks gestation and under 6mm between 18 and 24 weeks gestation.
