HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone produced by cells in developing placenta. It is commonly called as pregnancy hormone since its presence confirms pregnancy. It can be detected after approximately 11 days of conception. HCG levels continue to double after every 2 or 3 days and reach peak level in 8-11 weeks of conception. After that, the levels slowly decline and remain steady for rest of the period of pregnancy. Placenta is a sac where fetus is nourished once the egg gets fertilized and attaches to the uterine wall.
Beta HCG test is a simple blood test wherein blood sample is derived from vein in the arm. An elastic band may be tied to upper arm so as to increase accumulation of blood in puncture site. Blood sample is then sent to laboratory for analysis. It is a relatively painless procedure. You might feel a little pinching sensation when needle is being inserted. There are no precautions to be taken prior to the procedure. One can return back to daily activities immediately after the test. No major risk are involved and the procedure is considered very safe.

There is no big cause to worry if HCG levels fluctuate. It is better to consult with your doctor if you are having any doubts.
