DEXA scan is also done as follow up for patients diagnosed with osteoporosis. It is also referred to as Dual X-ray Absorptiometry or DXA scan. This test also helps the doctor to track the osteoporotic patient's response to treatments. Bones are majorly responsible for helping us walk, run, move around. Without the bone structure and its support we cannot even dream of performing all these tasks without falling down or tripping. Hence it is very important to safeguard bone health at all costs.
A dexa scan procedure usually is completed in 5-10 minutes. In it the person has to lie down on an examination table. However you maybe asked to lie down absolutely still to prevent images coming unclear. A scanner which has 2 beams- a high energy and low energy beam is then passed when you are in the lying down position. Bone density is calculated based on the difference between both these beams. Bone density in every region of the body is variable. Thereafter, bone density is calculated of the spinal, thighs and forearms region.
Dexa Scans are beneficial imaging modalities as they are painless procedures and provide the doctor information whether the person has chances of becoming osteoporotic. Further, anesthesia is not required. The person can resume his routine duties soon after the test, as it takes very few minutes to be completed.
