Liver Function Tests (LFT) assess Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and Alanine aminotransferase (ALT). These are main liver enzymes present in blood. Albumin and bilirubin tests are also 2 parameters inclusive in LFT. Albumin test measures how well the liver creates protein albumin, whereas bilirubin test measures the ability of liver to eliminate bilirubin, a waste product of the blood.

Your doctors may order LFTs for various purposes and also to ensure prevention of further complications in liver. A Liver function test is helpful in checking for any symptoms of liver disorder, screening liver infections, such as hepatitis C; monitoring the side effects of certain medicines that are known to affect liver. It is also useful in tracking progression (if you are suffering from any that is) of liver disease and your body's response to treatments. Liver cirrhosis is also possible to identify through an LFT.

The test results denote whether you are suffering from any minor liver infection or something serious like liver damage or liver cirrhosis. You can take follow-up with the doctor post testing. Thus it is easier to get your doubts solved and get informed about where you stand in terms of your health. The test gets over in a matter of few minutes. Post the test you can resume your daily activities till results are generated.

Few diseases that disrupt proper functioning of liver are alcoholic liver disease, cirrhosis, hepatitis C, fatty liver disease. If proper testing and controlling of food intake is done, it will not only keep all these diseases at bay but will also improve overall health.
