NT Scan Price in India

A nuchal translucency scan (NT scan) or nuchal scan helps in finding out the risk of having Down's syndrome (DS) in your baby with the help of ultrasound. It also helps detect other chromosomal abnormalities and major congenital heart problems. It is an ultrasound test carried out between 11.5 and 13 weeks 6 days gestation. It is generally a part of combined first trimester screening.

There are many health care centers in India that offer the facility of Nuchal translucency (NT Scan). We have compiled a list of diagnostic centers that offer NT Scan facility across various cities in the country for your convenience. It will help you choose the right NT scan center for monitoring healthy growth of your baby.

A nuchal scan helps in detecting cardiovascular abnormalities in a fetus. The chromosomal abnormalities may result in impaired cardiovascular development. The translucent space in the tissue at the back of your baby's neck is determined by NT scan. In case of babies with abnormalities, more accumulation of fluid at the back of their neck during the first trimester is observed; thus making this clear or translucent space larger than average.

The NT scan is non-invasive in nature. It needs to be done when you're between 11 and 14 weeks pregnant, since during this time, your baby's neck base is still transparent in nature. (The last day to perform nuchal scan is the day when mother turns 13 weeks and 6 days pregnant. It has been reported by some health care practitioners that absence of nasal bone in the developing baby in the first trimester is an indication about high likelihood of chromosomal abnormalities in the baby.

Things to be noted about nuchal translucency scan:

  1. This scan is not exactly a diagnostic test like other screening tests since it can only assess risk for certain abnormalities in your baby.
  2. To all pregnant women in the first trimester, nuchal scan is offered. Since it requires special training and equipment, not all healthcare providers provide it.
  3. NT scan is considered as 98% accurate in detecting Down syndrome in babies as per medical literature.
  4. In case of women of age 35 or older, there is a high risk of carrying a child with Down syndrome. In such cases, cell-free DNA testing is offered to find out the abnormalities.
  5. Increased rate of nuchal translucency scan is also associated with non-chromosomal abnormalities such as genetic conditions (Di George syndrome) and non-genetic ones (Body-stalk anomaly).

Procedure of NT scan:

During Nuchal translucency scan, a well-trained and experienced sonographer confirms gestational age of your baby. A sensor called transducer is positioned on the abdomen of the mother so as to observe nuchal translucency of the baby on the screen and to carry out its on screen thickness measurement with the help of calipers.

Nuchal scan is carried out with a transabdominal ultrasound. The process of transabdominal ultrasound involves scanning through your lower abdomen. On the skin of the lower abdomen, a small amount of ultrasound gel is applied. This gel helps in improving contact between the skin and ultrasound probe. In some cases, a transvaginal ultrasound is also required. A close look at the baby, ovaries or cervix may required. Transvaginal ultrasound during all stages of pregnancy; including the first trimester, is safe and not harmful to your baby.

Mother's age, baby's gestational age, blood test results and the nuchal translucency measurement are important parameters which help in deciding the baby's chance of getting chromosomal abnormalities. Age is a factor that always matters when it comes to carrying a baby. With older age women, chances of abnormalities in child increase. In cases where baby's nuchal translucency is above 99th percentile for his/her gestational age, a high risk of getting major congenital heart disease is associated. For treating these cases, a fetal echo cardiogram - a special ultrasound is recommended. Babies with heart defects need to be monitored at regular intervals using ultrasound.

Accuracy of nuchal translucency scan

Not all cases of Down syndrome can be detected by screening methods. Not all tests provide accurate results. Sometimes, when the baby is really having Down syndrome, results of screening may indicate low risk. This is known as false negative results. On the contrary, when the baby is fine, positive results showing presence of Down syndrome can happen. Such results are known as false-positive results. This may confuse the patients and lead to unnecessary further testing for confirmation of abnormalities. The reliability of a test can be decided based on its detection rate. The advantage of nuchal scanning over the initial biochemical blood profile testing methods is reduction in the rates of false-positive results.

NT scan results

With each day of gestation, baby's nuchal translucency becomes thicker. Based on this, medical researchers have established the length of translucent area during the three weeks of screening. They have also determined the statistical relationship between this measurement, the baby's age, the mother's age, and the possibility of a baby with certain abnormalities. Results can be obtained very soon or it may take up to 10 days based on the data processing conditions.

Nuchal fold thickness

The nuchal translucency is no longer visible at the end of the second trimester of pregnancy. The nuchal fold thickness is measured instead of nuchal translucency between 16 and 24 weeks gestation. The thickness of nuchal fold is considered normal if under 5mm between 16 and 18 weeks gestation and under 6mm between 18 and 24 weeks gestation.

It has been reported by healthcare professionals that all women; regardless of their age, have small risk of carrying babies with physical or cognitive defects. NT scan helps physicians in determining risk of the baby having abnormalities in more accurate way rather than considering maternal age only. We have compiled this list for the ease of readers.
