Triple marker test is also known as Triple test, AFP plus and Multiple marker screening. This is an important test for detection of genetic abnormalities in the fetus. To avoid future complications, all pregnant women are advised to undergo this test. This test gives an idea about the probability of a woman giving birth to multiple children. During the 15th and 20th week of pregnancy, Triple marker test is carried out in general. Results of the Triple marker performed in the 16th-18th week are considered as accurate ones.

Abnormal levels of three markers in the triple marker test indicate presence of abnormalities in the fetus. These abnormalities indicate,

  1. Development of twins or triplets
  2. Incorrect pregnancy timeline
  3. Neural tube defects
  4. Down's syndrome
  5. Edward's syndrome

All pregnant women are advised to undergo the triple marker test for detection of fetus abnormalities if any. This test is specially recommended in following cases:

  1. Women of age 35 or older
  2. Genetic abnormality history in family
  3. Viral infection history in pregnancy
  4. Radiation exposure history
  5. Diabetic women on insulin

It is recommended to have primary knowledge about the test. This helps in reducing anxiety about the triple marker test in some anxious patients.

Being a non-invasive procedure, the Triple test is extremely safe and hence, risk is not associated; both for the fetus and mother. If you still have doubts, you can clear them with your doctor, or we are available to guide you.
